'Are you ready for some football?'

So at the start of last season, I wrote down copywriting tips for the football season. This time around, I decided to 'mix it up,' as they say in sports parlance, and write a list of football cliches you can add to your copywriting and other content projects, such as blogs, articles, social media posts and ads, to give them that football flavor. After all, who doesn't want to feel like the Peyton Mannings, the Tom Bradys, and the Megatrons?"

The great thing about these clichés is, you don't have to copy them verbatim: You can mix and match, vary, and change them (as long as they make some kind sense)...

For example, let's take the phrase: 'The whole nine yards.'

Depending on what you do or what your product/service is, you can change it to: The whole 10 yards. The whole nine fact about.../The whole nine reasons why...

'Quicker than fast' - (as in: our service is quicker than fast!)

Recruiting company: Looking for that generational talent?

Now's the time to make the big play for the [product/service/vacation] you always dreamed of

False start ('don't get the school year off to a false start!')

Second guessing - (This [product/service] won't leave you second guessing]

Even if you're selling your car, you can add touches, like: Barely used Honda with tremendous upside and untapped potential...

You get the picture. And the great thing about these football clichés, they're good, in most cases, for the pro and college football crowd.

So, without further ado, here are so football clichés to add some color in your copywriting, social media, web content, blogs, or any other type of promotional texts.

"What are they trying to sell me?"
That's not the reaction you want out of your user...

'Keys to [winning] the [Thanksgiving/Holiday Season] game'

How about: 'Boom!' Goes great just about everywhere - sparingly.

The edge' [as in: Now we/they/you've got the edge to...]

Off to the races

Carry the team

Split the defenders

Go for it

It's now or never

Illegal formation

'You couldn't write a script like this.'

'We have to take it one game at a time.'

Stop the clock

Bad execution

Well balanced

'That was a helluva (one word - remember that) run/catch/touchdown/hit/sack'

Example: This holiday season, don't get sacked by______

'[Left it] All on the field'

'Establish the run/pass

Stick to your game plan

Hard-hitting...

'Giving it 110 percent' - just NO. Is there 110% in that soda can people buy?

Stop the big play - say you're selling a bug spray: 'Want to stop them roaches from making the big play?' For example... or...

Keep the drive alive

Throw your game plan out the window

Move the chains

Punch it in here

Can't cough it up here

Take it to the next level/step it up

Call an audible

The ball went wide off the mark

This is fourth down territory

Should be a chip shot

Sailed through the uprights

Throwing up a prayer

And my personal favorite: It is what it is.
